    His clear favorite:
“You know who my favorite is? Naima, because she is the only one so far that realistically has the appeal to cross over and be a model. She reminds me of a CK Calvin Klein girl in the early ’90s, and that’s coming back. I can totally see her being a Cover Girl; she has a gorgeous face. She’s not your typical feminine girly girl, but [last season’s winner] Eva has that edge too.

    America's Next Top Model 2005

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usthanks for the caps Gen:)

Naima Mora strutted her stuff on the last episode of America's Next Top Model 2005, catapulting herself into the title role. Considered the front-runner very early on, this 2002 Cass Tech alum took full advantage of the opportunity to become America's newest sweetheart. Once haunted by feelings of unworthiness and insecurity, Naima rose to the challenge as she "worked it" for the judges, no doubt utilizing some of the dance moves she studied at CT. The suspense built up as the panel of judges, including supermodel and hostess Tyra Banks, decided that the quiet girl from Detroit had what it takes to be a cover girl and representative of the 2005 version of the popular reality show. One of her first apperances was as a guest on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Let's all keep our eyes and ears open as this stunning Cass Tech Hall of Famer follows her dreams.

    Hometown Makeover
Out in Hunt Valley, the creators of CoverGirl products are putting on a new face and reaching out to local consumers.

It is one of Baltimore's best-kept secrets, but it is a fact.

    Beauty begins in Hunt Valley.

On an unassuming part of York Road, nearly hidden among squat hobby shops and antiques stores, sits the international headquarters for the largest, possibly most-recognizable cosmetics company in the nation.

CoverGirl -- home to such famous faces as Christie Brinkley, Molly Sims and Tyra Banks -- has been in Baltimore County since 1966. There it sits, across the street from a Midas and a Firestone, Andy Nelson's BBQ and a KFC, a campus of nondescript buildings and lush green trees. While you've waited on a muffler repair, or ordered a bucket of Original Recipe, they've been over there churning out beauty products for women day after day, year after year.

Women across the country have grown up with CoverGirl. The company's famous liquid foundations, powdered eye shadows and tubes of lipsticks are as much a part of the American landscape as jazz, Fourth of July fireworks and hot dogs hawked at baseball games.

Who would have guessed, though, that CoverGirl was a part of the Baltimore landscape?

"You just associate big companies like that with New York and L.A.," says Angie Phillips of Bel Air, while watching her sister Amy get made over by a CoverGirl makeup artist this month at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. "Places trendier than Baltimore."

For CoverGirl executives, however, Baltimore is the perfect place to situate a cosmetics company. Charm City isn't trendy and neither is CoverGirl. They're both reliable, consistent. Tried-and-trusted.

Baltimore and beauty go together like summertime and crab cakes, CoverGirl execs think. And it's time to make a bigger deal about that.

"CoverGirl is loved in America," says Anne Martin Vachon, vice president of global cosmetics and beauty marketing for Procter & Gamble, which owns CoverGirl. "It should be loved in its hometown."

So, like a woman applying a fresh coat of red lipstick, the company began this past spring making itself more noticeable.

Maybe you've seen smiling, fresh-faced CoverGirl representatives at Orioles games, handing out thousands of tubes of Outlast All-Day Lipcolor, or giving makeovers around the stadium. Perhaps you've noticed the signs hanging from light poles on Interstate 895 or on Orleans and Russell streets, or at the airport, that proclaim "Baltimore: Home to CoverGirl since 1961."

The signage and freebies are the very beginning of a homecoming campaign that the company started in April, when the Miss USA Pageant came to town. As the official cosmetics sponsor of Miss USA, CoverGirl seized the opportunity to capitalize on its hometown advantage.

"Miss USA was a great impetus for us," says Paul Yocum, CoverGirl's marketing director. "That really got the ball rolling."

The company planned two nights of giveaways and makeovers at Oriole Park, on Mother's Day and earlier this month, and is now planning more community outreach programs with the Orioles. CoverGirl will be host to Latino Night at Camden Yards on Aug. 13 and Student Night on Sept. 16. And Yocum's marketing team is thinking daily about what more they can do to increase CoverGirl's visibility in the region.

The reach-out campaign is a long time in the making.

CoverGirl, as we know it, started in Hampden as the Noxzema Chemical Co. In 1961, the company launched the world's first medicated face foundation. They called it "Cover Girl."

In 1966, the company, then called Noxell, moved itself and its foundations -- which came in three shades, in a liquid and a powder -- to Hunt Valley. Once there, Noxell moved into eye makeup, lip colors and nail polish, eventually expanding the name CoverGirl to include a full array of cosmetics.

Although CoverGirl was targeting women of a relatively affluent lifestyle -- $1.50 for foundation in the 1960s was not cheap -- the brand was the first to sell its cosmetics in mass retail outlets.

"Before, women got them in pharmacies," Vachon says.

In 1989, Procter & Gamble bought Noxell and CoverGirl Cosmetics. Although the merger greatly increased the size of the company -- including a relocation of the Max Factor line of cosmetics from the West Coast to here in the early 1990s -- CoverGirl stayed in Hunt Valley.

"We have offices in Asia, north and south, Geneva, the United Kingdom," says Vachon. "But Hunt Valley is the global headquarters for Procter & Gamble cosmetics. It's quite amazing when you think about it."

Since the merger, the company has expanded in other ways, as well -- particularly in the area of diversity. It was the first to have a Hispanic spokesmodel, Patricia Velasquez, in the 1990s. And in addition to Tyra Banks, one of the most well-known African-American CoverGirl models, the company has sold cosmetics using the faces of such black women as singers Brandy and Queen Latifah, and modeling novice Eva Pigford, last year's winner of Banks' America's Next Top Model.

Being diverse "makes people associate with the brand," Vachon says. "We don't put our models on pedestals. They could be your best friends. A lot of them are mothers with kids. We call them 'good-girls-with-a-wink.' "

That diversity also is a reflection of Baltimore's influence on the company.

"Baltimore celebrates a diverse population, both in its history and its makings," Yocum says. "It's a great slice of American history. And I think CoverGirl fits into that."

    ********************************************************************
On a recent tour of the 1,000-employee York Road plant, Naima Mora, the most recent Top Model winner and the latest face of CoverGirl, said she had expected the site of the largest cosmetics company in the country to be huge, to stand out, to be smack in the middle of a bustling metropolis.

But after she'd spent a day in Baltimore -- throwing out the first pitch at an Orioles vs. Houston Astros game, and signing autographs at a CoverGirl tent at the stadium -- the doe-eyed model from Detroit said she could understand why the company is here.

"CoverGirl really embraced me. They really welcomed me into their family," says Mora, 21. "And I felt that same energy [from Baltimore residents] throughout my trip here. That's a beautiful quality that Baltimore gives the company."

Even with Mora's professional endorsement, people still are surprised to learn that CoverGirl is based here.************************************************
    ********************************************************************

"Crabs and beauty?" asks an incredulous Diane Cox of Winston-Salem, N.C., as she was getting her face made up at a CoverGirl booth at Camden Yards this month. "That doesn't really go together, does it?"

CoverGirl executives know there's more to be done to increase the company's local visibility. Soon, they say, with better outreach, more and more people across the country and around the world will know that beauty begins in Hunt Valley and Baltimore.

Something really scary happened last night. My husband and I went to this fastfood place named Jollibee, we were getting ready to eat when all of a sudden this guy just stumbles through the door. He was bleeding like crazy. I guess he was shot across the street from where we were eating. He was screaming "help pls. call 911, I've been shot". The really sad part was my husband and I were the only ones who helped him. I could not believe what I saw, those people from that restaurant just looked at him and resumed eating and some of them just left to transfer to a different table. How sick and depressing is that? There's definately something very wrong with those people.
Thanks God the police and the ambulance arrived really fast and that the guy is going to be ok. He gave us his Mom's and his girlfriend's number, so we called and informed them what happened.
I'm still pinching myself to see if it was just a horrible nightmare.

Naima interview from Starry Constellation Magazine:

Naima Mora is the WINNER of
AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL 4 by Jamie Steinberg

    Q) Who is your favorite designer?

    A) My favorite designer of all time is Alexander McQueen. His works are very fantastic and dreamy and almost ethereal. Along with that, his fashion shows are that way. I'm really into that and I love that part of the fashion industry. I find kind of like a home in it.

    Q) Why did you decide to apply for the show?

    A) I had wanted to model, but I didn't really want to do a reality TV show at first. My friends kept telling me that I should really audition for the show and I said no, but I was actually working at my coffee shop job. A producer came in, after I had unfortunately missed several auditions, and good for me that they did. They said I should really come by for an interview tomorrow. I looked at it and said that it was probably going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity and it would probably be a lot of fun so why not?

    Q) What was it like meeting Tyra Banks?

    A) Tyra is beautiful! She's a really kind person. When I first met her, it was in this big group of girls at the semifinals and I was star struck. I couldn't believe I was in a room meeting Tyra Banks. Now, I feel like she is one of my big sisters.

    Q) What did you like most about living in the loft?

    A) I have to say that I used to hang out with a lot of guys, kind of like a tomboy, and I missed having girlfriends. I liked the most when we would go out, with everyone putting on their makeup together, putting our hair together and putting on outfits.

    Q) What did you learn most about modeling from the show?

    A) I learned most about modeling is just to be myself and to work really hard.

    Q) What was your most difficult photo shoot?

    A) The shoots were all very difficult because in each photo shoot I had to challenge myself more than the previous one. Because, as all the rest of the girls were getting better, I had to get better as well. I think every photo shoot was harder than the one before.

    Q) Do you feel that your personality showed more at the end of the show?

    A) Yeah, I do think that a lot of my personality showed more towards the end because it was a point in the competition where I started to believe in myself and feel really good about who Naima is.

    Q) You were the people's choice for CoverGirl of the Week for a record ten times in a row. How does that make you feel?

    A) I feel great! I feel amazing! I appreciate everyone who voted for me every single week. It makes me feel really good and it warms my heart.

    Q) What was the most surprising comment you received when the group was told to critique each other's photos?

    A) It was hard because I knew the judges wanted to see how critical we could be of each other and how well we knew what we were doing. You make friends with someone that you live with for so long and I guess it was hard for them to hear, but not even that because I am sure it was, but it was hard at the end critiquing my friends.

    Q) How did you get rid of your butterflies at the last photo shoot?

    A) I didn't. I never got rid of my butterflies. I was always nervous, anxious and excited.

    Q) What was it like getting to walk on water?

    A) It was like a dream. It was my first fashion show and it was absolutely an amazing experience. It felt like a dream to me.

    Q) Did you ever feel like you were going to fall off the runway when walking on the water?

    A) We had a rehearsal earlier during the day and I felt pretty secure. We had little sandals on and there were lights on the stage. I didn't think I was going to trip or anything.

    Q) Do you plan on keeping in touch with anyone from the show?

    A) Oh yes! Totally! I still talk to a couple of the girls and actually, all of them are going to be moving to New York so we'll probably be hanging out and working together.

    Q) What advice do you have for contestants who try out in the future?

    A) Be brave! Be courageous! Have lots of fun with it and knock 'em dead when you go in there. Really believe in yourself!

    Q) What are you going to do now that you are the winner of the show?

    A) I work as the new face of CoverGirl. I start modeling and I start living out one of my dreams!

    Q) What would you like to say to your fans and supporters of you and the show?

    A) I would really like to say that I appreciate them so much! Follow your dreams and believe in yourself!

Today I'm stressed out as hell, I always get like this a week before my inlaws come to visit.
On the 18th I'll be in Seattle to attend my nephew's graduation and the next day, my inlaws and other relatives 7 of them to be exact, are flying back with my hubby and I here in the Bay Area.
Everything has to be perfect before they get here (well not exactly), my fault for being so stressed out over nothing.
I'm so excited to see Mr and Mrs Smith tonight...hope it doesn't disappoint.

Naima was on BET Style today, she was only on for a few minutes. Tyra was commenting on her at the emmy and Naima answering a few questions about winning and keenyah. She talked about keenyah being jealous but they get along now and she doesn't hold grudges. She looked good but she looked very tired (as she said in her last interview she's on 2 hours sleep) her hair was the same as it was when she was on 106 & park but she was wearing a pinkish shirt the kind that show cleavage at the top but have a two strings to tie at the top.
Oh I almost forgot, Keenyah was on BET Style too. She looked very pretty and she had lost a lot of weight, too bad her attitude is still the same she's every bit as arrogant now as she was on ANTM, which is a shame really because I think she's really pretty but her attitude is such a turnoff.
